The Winder Lecture
In the year 1647 Thomas Winder, a grocer of London instituted a sermon to be preached at the church of St Michael the Archangel, Warfield, on a Sunday in the proximity of Guy Fawkes Day.
This tradition has continued for several centuries. Each year we invite an eminent speaker to address us on an area of contemporary concern. This year, the lecture was given by Rt Revd Olivia Graham, Bishop of Reading, who spoke on the subject of the environmental challenges we face. Bishop Olivia is one of three bishops in the Church of England leading on environmental matters. She says, “Through our action and inaction, vast swathes of our home planet are rapidly becoming uninhabitable for humankind and many other species. We need to take a deep dive into ourselves and the way we live and recognise the spiritual and practical shifts we need to make in the face of this crisis.”
